Celebrating it’s 25th year this years IRONMAN event takes place on 21 May.
After the volcanic eruptions in the 1730’s the islanders demonstrated their grit and determination, transforming a potential natural disaster into a triumph. It’s therefore very apt that one of the toughest IRONMAN competitions takes place on the island each year attracting sports men and women from all corners of the globe who demonstrate their strength, determination and endurance!
The competition begins at 7am with a 3.8Km swim in the Atlantic Ocean, followed by a steep, challenging bike ride of 180.2Km and ends with a 42.2Km running marathon in Puerto del Carmen. The sun, wind and heat really test the stamina of those taking part in the event! The event ends when the last participant makes it to the finish!
Participants can rely on great support from locals and tourists alike, local school children are usually amongst the many volunteers that hand out refreshments during the competition and everyone along the route will cheer them on.
Lanzarote also hosts the IRONKIDS Aquathlon, a tough run-swim-run competition in which kids age 7-17 take part. IRONKIDS Lanzarote usually takes place the day before the IRONMAN in Puerto del Carmen, this year 20th May.
