La Graciosa is the island in every photograph taken from the Mirador del R\u00edo and the one hardly anyone actually reaches. Not because it is difficult: because it is badly planned. Almost all of the mistake happens back in Lanzarote, before anyone boards a boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An island with no tarmac roads: dirt tracks, sand streets and one village, Caleta de Sebo, where a private car is of no use to you. It deserves a whole day. Here is how to build it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short answer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You cross from \u00d3rzola<\/strong>, at the northern tip of Lanzarote. There are three ways: the regular ferry<\/strong> (25\u201330 minutes, cheapest and entirely your own plan, run by L\u00edneas Mar\u00edtimas Romero and Biosfera Express), a catamaran<\/strong> (a full day organised for you, with sailing and food on board) or a private boat<\/strong> (around 20 minutes, for groups of 2 to 10, at whatever time you choose). What almost nobody allows for is the part before: Playa Blanca to \u00d3rzola is roughly 75 minutes of driving each way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The catamaran<\/strong> includes kayak and snorkel stops, paella and drinks on board, and transfers from the main resort areas depending on the day of the week. You should be a confident swimmer to get the most from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water taxi<\/strong> is a rigid-hull speedboat across the El R\u00edo strait. It runs daily, takes 2 to 10 passengers, and the crossing itself is part of the experience. Mistake 1: assuming \u00d3rzola is close<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lanzarote is 60 kilometres long and the northern roads are narrow and slow. From Playa Blanca it is about 75 minutes each way<\/strong>; from Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen, considerably less, but never “twenty minutes”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means two things: leave a genuine margin so you do not miss the boat, and expect to drive back in the dark if you take the last crossing. Budget a full day, not a morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mistake 2: crossing with no plan for getting around<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is where the day breaks. There is no tarmac on La Graciosa, and the best beaches \u2014 Las Conchas, to the north \u2014 are not next to the village. You reach them on foot along a track, by bicycle or in the local four-by-fours, and each option dictates your return time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decide before you board how you will move and how long you want on the sand. If you would rather not make that decision at all, the catamaran makes it for you: it anchors off the coves and removes the land transfer entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mistake 3: leaving it until your last day<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wind is the single factor that governs Lanzarote, and the northern crossings feel it first. No sea activity can be guaranteed on a specific date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rule we always give: do not put La Graciosa on the last day of the trip<\/strong>. Leave a day of slack so you can move it. If the sea does not cooperate you have a fallback; if it is your final day, you simply miss the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When to go<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

September and October are arguably the best moment of the year: the water is at its best, there are fewer people than in August and the light holds. You can cross in winter too \u2014 the island has no bad season \u2014 but the wind has more of a say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One more thing for the day before or after: from the Mirador del R\u00edo<\/a>, high on the Risco de Famara cliff, you look straight down on the whole of La Graciosa. Seeing it from above before you set foot on it changes the visit.<\/p>\n\n\n
