It’s the most-asked question on every Lanzarote forum: “Do I need to hire a car?”<\/em>. And it always gets the same two lazy answers: “absolutely essential” or “no, there are buses”. The truthful answer depends on two things: where you’re staying and what you came to see. Let’s settle it properly, so you can decide in five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you can genuinely do without a car<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let’s be fair to the buses \u2014 locals call them guaguas<\/em>. The IntercityBus Lanzarote network works well where it makes sense to: the Arrecife \u2013 Puerto del Carmen \u2013 Puerto Calero \u2013 Playa Blanca corridor runs regularly, and a direct line connects the airport with Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca for around \u20ac3 a ride. There’s no direct airport bus to Costa Teguise, though \u2014 it’s an easy change in Arrecife. You pay on board, contactless cards accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your holiday is beach, promenade, restaurants and the odd organised day out, you can build it without a steering wheel: special bus lines run to Teguise’s Sunday market, and the island’s best excursions \u2014 Timanfaya, the wine route, the catamarans \u2014 almost always include pickup at or near your accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Translation: resort Lanzarote works fine without a car<\/strong>. The problem is everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you’ll miss without one (and it’s not small print)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the part the forums get wrong. The places you probably chose Lanzarote for have no bus stop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Timanfaya.<\/strong> No regular bus line reaches the National Park. You either drive to the Monta\u00f1as del Fuego entrance or join an organised tour. If you’re driving, read our guide to choosing your entry slot<\/a> first \u2014 the car park and timed tickets have their quirks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Geria.<\/strong> The wine road, the LZ-30, has no public transport with useful stops. Without a car (or a chauffeured wine tour<\/a>), the wineries are off your list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wild south.<\/strong> El Golfo and its green lagoon, Los Hervideros, the Papagayo beaches. Papagayo sits inside a protected Natural Monument, reached by a dirt track with a \u20ac3-per-car access fee \u2014 card payment only. No bus will drop you there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire north.<\/strong> Mirador del R\u00edo, \u00d3rzola and its ferry to La Graciosa, the villages around Har\u00eda. The north is the greener, quieter half of the island \u2014 and it’s car territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the intangibles:<\/strong> pulling over at a viewpoint just because, dinner at a village teleclub<\/a>, chasing the sunset wherever it catches you. The island covers 845 km\u00b2 and crossing it end to end takes around an hour and a quarter. Rarely does so little driving buy you so much island.<\/p>\n\n\n
